What is the Liver for?

The liver is a large, vital organ located in the upper right side of the abdomen, beneath the rib cage. It performs over 500 essential functions that keep the body healthy. These include:

  • Filtering toxins from the blood
  • Producing bile to help digest fats
  • Storing energy in the form of glycogen
  • Regulating blood clotting
  • Metabolizing medications and nutrients

What is Liver Transplant?

A liver transplant is a surgical procedure to replace a diseased or failing liver with a healthy liver from a donor. It is typically performed in patients with end-stage liver disease, acute liver failure, or certain liver cancers. The transplant can involve a whole liver from a deceased donor or a portion of a liver from a living donor. It is a life-saving treatment that restores normal liver function and improves quality of life.

Pediatric Liver Transplant

Pediatric liver transplantation is a surgical procedure in which a diseased liver in a child is replaced surgically with a healthy liver from either:

  • A living donor (usually a parent or close relative)
  • A deceased donor after brain death

Because the liver can regenerate, only a portion of the donor liver is needed in living donor transplantation. This is especially important in children because suitable deceased donor organs are limited. The amount of liver needed depends on the children's weight. So, in children, only a small portion of the liver from a live donor is taken for implantation in children.

What is the cost ofa Liver Transplant?

The liver transplant surgery involves two surgeries simultaneously- one in the donor and the other in the recipient. The surgery usually lasts for 10-12 hr. in the patient and 6-8 hr. in the donor. After the surgery, the patient requires high-end ICU care with the facility of ventilator support, continuous monitoring, and advanced ICU infection control protocol.

The cost of a blood group-compatible adult liver transplant in India is around 15-30 lakh, which is still much lower than in Western countries like the USA (2-4 crore) and the UK (1-2 crore).
